If you watched the Super Bowl this year, odds are you saw the charming “new” Dove Men+Care ad with a collage of children and young adults sharing touching moments with their dads, often calling out for them. The YouTube version of the commercial has gone viral, having already been viewed over 5.7 million times.
But this isn’t the first time Dove has actually used this ad footage—it also appeared in a Father’s Day campaign in June of 2014 with only a few textual alterations. What’s even more strange is that it didn’t go viral last year, receiving a little over 40,000 views so far. Check out the similarities between the two ads.
The vast difference in the number of views, though odd, could be accounted for by the fact that the second ad campaign was shared by Dove Men+Care directly, whereas the Father’s Day ad appears to have been shared by a third-party channel. But it’s more likely due to the broad Super Bowl audience who were finally exposed to the touching video.
Either way, Dove Men+Care seems to have scored a touchdown with their “new” viral ad that wasn’t anywhere near viral a year ago.
