On her last day of chemotherapy treatment, Tamara Bruzzo received a surprise that made the day better than she could have ever imagined.

Diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma earlier this year, twenty-one-year-old Bruzzo was scheduled to receive her last chemotherapy treatment in Boca Raton, Florida. However, her boyfriend, twenty-four-year-old Lucas D’Onofrio, had plans to make the day even more special: a surprise proposal.

In an interview, D’Onofrio said, “It was something I knew would make her really happy at the end of everything.”

On the day of Bruzzo’s last treatment, D’Onofrio had multiple nurses, family, and friends come help him prepare one of the hospital rooms at Boca Raton Regional Hospital. The group filled the room with candles and roses, and a fireworks display was set up outside the window.

“She said YES!!!!” D’Onofrio wrote on Facebook after he proposed. Later, he stated, “I had about three months after I decided I wanted to propose on the day of her last chemo session. Little by little I thought of ideas. She had no idea it was coming.”

A video of the proposal has received lots of attention, something D’Onofrio did not expect. “I just put it up on Facebook and YouTube for friends and family. I was very surprised it got so much attention, but I think it made it even more special for Tamara.”

Bruzzo was recently released from the hospital and received a a PT scan this week that came back negative, with “no signs of cancer cells” according to D’Onofrio.
