Gabriel Hernandez, a father of two who works three jobs to support his family, recently lost his wallet in a New York City cab. Miraculously, it was returned to him with all the money inside.

Annie Martin, a television make-up artist, was riding a cab to work when she found a wallet with $340 inside. Nothing in the wallet gave clues leading to its owner, so Martin asked WABC-TV’s Nina Pineda for assistance.

Pineda located two receipts in the wallet for the Bronx area Baychester Payment Center, a check-cashing service. Cashier Sonya Carballo looked up the date and time listed on the receipts and matched them to records Baychester keeps of all its customers. Carballo recognized the man who had cashed the checks.

“He cashes his check here every Saturday,” Carballo said. “That was his whole check, his whole paycheck in that wallet.”

Carballo sent a Baychester employee to find the owner of the wallet. Hernandez has worked as a dishwasher in an East Village pub for over eight years. He said the money was for his sons’ Christmas presents.

“Gracias,” Hernandez said. “Feliz Navidad.”
