Trail Blazer Chris Kaman became a first time father on Sunday when his wife Emilie gave birth to their son Barrett Christopher Kaman at 12:27 a.m.

“Everything in my life changes now,” Kaman said. “You have to be more responsible in everything that you do. Decisions are going to need to be thought out a lot more than they had been.”

Kaman missed only one game–the Blazers’ Friday night victory over the Philadelphia 76ers–but was able to support his team by watching the game from the delivery room during Emilie’s 32 hour labor.

When eight pound, two ounce Barrett made his debut, Kaman was overcome with emotion.

“It’s interesting,” he said. “I feel like it’s a different kind of connection. I’ve seen my nephews grow up. I’ve helped kind of raise them a little bit. But it’s completely different to have your own. The connection you have with the baby is unbelievable.”

Kaman explained that one of the reasons he and his wife decided to name their son Barrett is because they can nickname him “Bear.”

“I was trying to figure out how I could call him Bear by having his full name be something else. And that was all that I could think of–Bear.”

Kaman returned to the Moda Center on Sunday to assist his team in winning a 101-79 victory against the New York Knicks. He scored 13 points and 9 rebounds in honor of his son’s arrival.
