On her 100th birthday, Winnie Blagden of England received a surprise birthday party put together by thousands of strangers.

Blagden, whose husband died thirty years ago, has no children and only a few surviving friends. In an interview, her caretaker for the past four years, Darren Pinder, stated that Blagden’s upcoming birthday went viral after his mother and colleague alerted the local British radio station.

“People felt sorry that she has no living family left,” stated Pinder.

To celebrate the centenarian’s birthday, the town hall was set up with presents, refreshments, and 16,000 cards from people all over the world.

Winnie had absolutely no idea about the surprise party. In the interview, Pinder said, “We gave her a tour and town hall had a cup of tea with the mayor. She thought we were going to take her to lunch and then she walked into a big room of people.”

After the party, Blagden was escorted to the radio station where she celebrated her special day with bacon sandwiches and opened her many birthday cards.

Blagden received a congratulatory message from the Queen as well as a card from Brendan Coyle, an actor from one of her favorite shows, Downton Abbey.

Pinder stated, “She told me, ‘I don’t deserve all this.’ I said, ‘Winnie, you’re a lovely person. You do deserve all of this and you lived to be 100.’ She’s just a real positive lady. She’s a kind person, you know. She’s always there to talk to and she’s been a real grandma figure.”

Blagden is keeping some of her favorite cards on her mantle, and is very grateful for the kindness everyone has shown her over the past couple days.
